Sub Tub

Create a tub with multiple mini lessons or other ideas for the substitute to use if you miss a day. This may include neccessary information such as class schedule, seating chart, school rules, and any important items. The sub tub may also include fun activities for the students to do such as riddles, crossword puzzles, Sudoku puzzles, maybe even the class favorite read aloud book!

V.I.P Students

Discuss with students what it means to be a V.I.P student in your classroom. This may include; being a good leader, listening to directions, respecting others, etc. Have a few baskets that include special school supplies such as; mechanical pencils, sceneted markers, coloring pages, fun erasers, etc. Anything a student would find to be a privilege to use throughout the school day. Pick a few students each day who have demonstrated the skills from the list you create as a class to be the V.I.P students in your classroom.

Secret Student

Pull a number/ popsicle stick every morning. This student is your "secret student". Do not tell students who you pulled. Share with students throughout the day you will watch this students behavior very closely and if this student follows all classroom expectations, they will get to choose a prize at the end of the day. (water bottle stickers were a hit for me!)

Classroom Management

Students thrive on expectations, routines, and consistentcy.

Do you have a signal to gain students attention? Stick to it! If students do not show desired behavior after completing signal, repeat until they are following expectations!

Do you have a system for lining up? Transitioning back to the classroom?

What are your whole group instruction expectations? Review these before EVERY lesson so students know how they are allowed to/ supposed to engage in the content when their participation is asked for.

What are your partner work/ small group expectations? You should develop these with your students so they have buy in. Are they posted in your classroom to reference as needed? Consider having students sign these expectations like a contract.
