Signals
Musical Signals
Shake a tamborine and slowly become quieter to regain students attention.
Freeze!
If students are working, together or alone, give them a 5 minute warning that you will be stopping them in 5 minutes.
When the 5 minutes is up, yell "FREEZE!" to gain students attention and ask them where they are in whatever they are working on and then decide if you want them to continue working or if you want to move on for the day.
5,4,3,2,1
Teacher holds their hand in the air and counts down from 5 to regain students attention and move on. Once this becomes routine, students should quiet down faster and faster.
Give me 5
Teacher holds up hand and says, "give me 5"
Students respond with raising their handing, giving the teacher 5 to notify them that the teacher has all students attention
Call and Response
Teacher yells first half of chant, students respond with second half.
For example,
Teacher: "Move, move, shake, shake..." (students can move and shake back to their seats)
Students: "Now drop (as they sit in their seats) what the teacher say?"
Zip it, Lock it...
Zip It (hold hand up to lips and pretend to zip lips shut)
Lock It (turn hand and pretend to lock lips)
Put It In My Pocket (pretend to put the key in your pocket)
Mac 'n' Cheese
Teacher: "Macoroni and Cheese!"
Students: "Everybody freeze!"
3,2,1, Countdown
Teacher counts down from 3 and once you hit 1, the students hands should all be in the air to notify you that you have their full attention again.
Clap 5 Countdown
"5" Clap 5 times
"4" Clap 4 times
"3" Clap 3 times
"2" Clap 2 times
"1" Clap 1 time
To regain students attention.
Happy Llama, Sad Llama
To check for understanding, students either make a happy llama with their hand to show that they understand.
Or students make a sad llama to show that they need some clarification.
Hands Up
"Hands on top" (Students put hands on top of their heads)
"Everybody stop"
